Great help from Pat, Vickie, Maggie, David and Chris at Magic at the Mill. These folks pulled in dozens of visitors and made station IDs with all the kids. Andrew recorded and hacked up the audio files and has put several in the top of the hour ID. Listen for these kids, they are so cool!

Randy Hill, Chris Lehman, Allie Learn and Rummagin’ Ray were slated for this evenings lineup. Our magical guests were thrilled to see the DJs at work.

2011 has been an extremely productive year for KMUZ that has culminated in going On The Air on December 17!  Thanks to past support from donors, along with the thousands of hours spent by dedicated community members, we have surmounted many obstacles with our all-volunteer effort.

Ongoing payments for the transmitter equipment and monthly operational expenses of over $500—soon to be over $1,000 by midwinter—necessitate financial support more than ever.  Please consider becoming a supporter of KMUZ with your donation of $40, $100, or more.  All of your donations are 100% tax deductible, and best of all, you’re investing in the growth of our area’s first community-run radio station!

Click on the “Donate” button on the right or mail your check to KMUZ-FM, P.O. Box 12038, Salem OR 97309.  Many thanks and best wishes for 2012 from the KMUZ family.

We’ve set a goal of $885 in donations for today.   :)  There are still 5 more hours. We have received $360 so far today from five donors, so we are over 1/3 of the way there!

In this past year we have accomplished so much and achieved our dream to bring community radio to the Mid-Willamette Valley. We so need a little more help in order to make our station and transmitter site of the quality needed to give you great local programming. Be a part of the KMUZ family!

KMUZ’s production room has had a makeover. Adding some sound traps and getting the gear off the floor will allow our programmers to be efficient. With the donation of a new turntable, we’re now able to incorporate vinyl into the production process, too. Thanks to Carl Beilstein and CT Holman for their efforts.

KMUZ Shifts Gears in Flood

Alex Carmichael broadcasts the Chandelier Swing live from the KMUZ bunker on Friday the 20th as we dodge the flood.

The waters were rising last Thursday night the 19th of January, and when they got within about 8 inches of the bottom of the floorboards at our Mission Mill studio, we bugged out! Andrew Esther and Rick Quenden, our tech guys, took the gear critical to broadcasting and streaming and set them up in Tim Patterson’s basement and within 46 minutes we were back on the air and online!

KMUZ broadcast from the basement for 22 hours before deciding it was okay to move it all back to the Willamette Heritage Center location, so we unplugged at 10 PM and within 36 minutes the signal was back online and on the air.

Kudos to all who stepped up to make this happen!

PS. The Statesman Journal even covered this event. And here’s a collection of flood photos, including several that show how close the water actually got to our studio floors.

KMUZ SEEKS NEW STUDIO

(Press Release)

KMUZ-FM, the community radio station serving Salem and the mid-Willamette Valley, is looking for a new home.  The all volunteer radio service has been broadcasting from the Mission Mill at the Willamette Heritage Center.  “Thanks to the facilities of the Heritage Center and the generosity of the law firm of Crowell Ing LLC, KMUZ has had a great place to start at the Mill,” said Board President Karen Holman.  “We were able to get KMUZ on the air and get our feet under us in our WHC studio location.”

The station was set up in a suite of rooms within the Crowell Ing law offices at the Willamette Heritage Center, using space excess to the needs of the firm.  According to KMUZ Treasurer Dave Hammock, “We were able to use the Mill studios at no charge, but our hosts’ space requirements have changed and KMUZ needs to leave the nest and find a new home. We knew this would eventually happen.”

After periodic testing through the late summer and fall, KMUZ-FM signed onto the airwaves for good on December 17th, 2012.   The station broadcasts at 88.5 MHz FM.  Treasurer Hammock, who will also coordinate KMUZ’s relocation effort, says the studio is connected to the transmitter via a relatively flexible internet link.  “This simplifies our move,” says Hammock “Once we locate and occupy a suitable studio site we can switch operations to the new Control Room in just a few hours.  There will be very little down time for the station.”

KMUZ-FM had an unexpected trial run of such a relocation during the recent flooding when the Willamette Heritage Center studios were threatened by rising waters.  Volunteers grabbed the essential radio gear and moved to a Board member’s house on higher ground.  After broadcasting “from the bunker” in the residential basement for a day, the equipment was returned to the mill as the waters receded.

A permanent move will be more complicated and require substantial efforts by station volunteers.  The current studio and office location will become unavailable at the end of February.  The KMUZ Board has established a working group to seek a new facility and plan the move.  As financial resources are limited (as they are for any young non-profit organization in 2012!), KMUZ is hoping to find advantageous terms of occupancy wherever the studio ends up.  Listeners, supporters or interested parties who have ideas for the Studio Relocation group are encouraged to contact KMUZ move coordinator Dave Hammock at treasurer@kmuz.org.

KMUZ is moving to downtown Salem!  The new permanent location of the KMUZ studios will be at 245 Division Street NE, Suite 300 (former location of Allied Video Productions).  Immediately following the receipt of keys on Thursday, March 1 volunteers are assembling to move.  Our target date for the entire move to be complete is March 6.

The space is perfect for us — plenty of room for a broadcast studio, a production studio, administration office, space for techies to work on equipment, and even a common area for hanging out with fellow KMUZers!  This is a very exciting development in the establishment of our community radio station and we are thankful to Crowell Ing LLC for donating space in the Mission Mill until we became ready to leave the nest.

Anyone who would like to offer help of any kind that would be related to our move, please contact Dave Hammock at dhammock(at)comcast(dot)net.
