It Takes a Community to Raise a Radio Station

August 4 will forevermore be a holiday on my calendar — the birthday of my beloved KMUZ!  An incredible moment in my life occurred that day when I got to announce “KMUZ Turner”, the official station identification, for the first time at 88.5 MHz. Sitting in the back of a van with a short rack of transmission equipment next to me, parked at the base of the radio tower, headphones on and clutching the SM58 mic, it was truly the most unique deejay experience I ever had–and ever will. This baby was a mere idea back on ’02 or so, and became a real project in ’06. I knew it would be a challenge but oddly I never realized just how incredibly difficult the road would be. However, that hour of signal testing on the top of Wipper Hill in Turner made it all worthwhile. It’s just mind-blowing: We Built A Radio Station. People could hear us in all parts of Salem (confirmed listeners in W, N, NE, SE) as well as Stayton! We have created a venue for our community to express ideas, share thoughts and music, and learn more about each other. It’s simply beautiful. Speaking of beautiful, that antenna is one gleaming beacon of exquisite engineering. This project is the ultimate synthesis of technology and grassroots DIY culture–how cool is that? I can’t wait to see (and hear) how the next phase evolves, when more community members join in the fun as programmers. Yeah, it’s been many years, and we can celebrate that we got a signal out, but KMUZ has just begun!  My deepest thanks go out to all of you that helped in so many ways. Namaste.

Karen McFarlane Holman

Roger Steffens and ‘The Life of Bob Marley, Part Two’

Get tickets now for the multi-media extravaganza ‘The Life of Bob Marley, Part Two’ at TicketsOregon.com. Roger Steffens will again bring his show full of rarities and insight into the the Marley mystique to Salem – with all new material! This is only the second time the Roger has been in Oregon with his Marley show in twenty years – and both times were for KMUZ’s fundraising efforts!

If you were lucky enough to see last year’s presentation of ‘The Life of Bob Marley’ by Roger at Willamette University, you know this is a world-class event by a top-notch speaker. At last year’s show, Roger told us that he had enough material to do 25+ shows and not repeat any of the video or audio clips – there is that much material he can bring to the show.

So this year is a continuation of last year’s show – only it’s “Part Two” – so even if you saw last year’s show, you won’t see anything repeated! So plan on coming back again. If you missed last year’s show, don’t miss this one!

The show is set for November 3rd at the Grand Theatre, from 7 – 9 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets are available online at TicketsOregon.com or at Ranch Records (any day now!) for just $10 advance. They’ll be $12 at the door.

Dave’s Wipper Hill Report

Dave “the rock” Hammock has this to report:

Curt Fisher a BIG THANK YOU!  He worked up a righteous sweat today driving some 30 steel pole steps into our wooden monopole.

Our construction team is lined up for Friday, October 21 to raise the monopole, add the antenna and hookup the transmitter.

Bethel Excavating and Santana Crane will work to set the pole. Broadcast Tower Services (BTS) will then mount the antenna.

Mike Johnson and BTS will certify that everything is done correctly and conforms to our construction permit with the FCC.

We are coordinating with the electrical contractor, Mark Griswold and PGE to then supply service.

We are working on getting an 8′X10′ Tuff Shed on site in the afternoon. The cost of all this fun is great, and Dave says, “So, if anybody has been thinking about a big donation, loan or other philanthropic gesture, now would be a very good time for it.”

With Dave’s excellent effort in this project we hope to realize our first continuous broadcast on October 31st, hey, isn’t that a holiday?

Update on Wipper Hill

Well…progress has been made, although we didn’t finish our “To-Do List” today.

Our wooden monopole tower is firmly planted on our lot on Wipper Hill (looks way cool from I-5).  However, our pole climber succumbed to the flu today before we got the antenna hung.  Rather than our risk being hurled upon from a great height (or having James of BTS fall off the tower in a feint) we shut down today before we attached our antenna to the mounting pipe.

We will be gathering the clan again next week.  We will hang and point the antenna and that might be the day we hook up the transmitter and re-establish our internet Studio-Transmitter-Link.  We’ll see if we have all our gear in time for that.

Cheers,
Dave Hammock
